constant
02/04/2025 for viola and piano
About
An older meaning of ‘constant’, as in a constant friend: reliable, dependable.
To the pianist
You are the constant one here: never getting faster, always steady, perfectly smooth when a note changes across the barline, only the slightest of dynamic shadings.
To the violist
There is some freedom in the way the part floats across the piano accompaniment: some of the notated rhythms are a bit fiddly and can be treated more in the nature of a notated rubato. Try to get to the next bar on time though, particulary where there is a new note on the downbeat rather than a tie from the previous bar.
(Bowings in this first draft are my best guess: please as you see fit.)
